About This Condition
Diverticulosis is often a chronic, asymptomatic condition discovered incidentally on imaging or colonoscopy, with only a minority of individuals developing symptomatic diverticular disease or diverticulitis. When diverticulitis occurs, it typically presents as an acute episode that may resolve with appropriate medical management, though recurrent episodes are common in some patients. The risk of complicated diverticulitis (such as abscess, fistula, perforation, or obstruction) increases with severe or inadequately treated inflammation, certain comorbidities, and, in some cases, younger age at presentation. Over time, chronic low-grade symptoms or segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis may develop in a subset. Long-term management focuses on risk stratification, lifestyle and dietary measures, monitoring for recurrence or complications, and individualized decisions about elective surgical intervention when indicated.
